Essential understanding
- Being creative involves purposeful play and risk-taking with the core elements, media and processes of art.
Learning Engagements
Activity 1: Twenty Five
I begin with an idea and that becomes something else. -Picasso
Assessment Task:
Produce 25-fine artworks in the next two weeks based upon an “object” of your choice selected from your HOME environment. Visually represent this object in as many differing situations as you can. Explore and develop a possible concentration (concept, theme, etc.) Up to 20 of your artworks can be photographic/ Photoshop-based pieces. See media details below. -Thanks to Bob Carnegan from Copenhagen International School for sharing this unit at the DP Visual Arts workshop in Seville in 2009. |

Choosing your object
If you already have some ideas about a concentration for your DP course, you can explore it through the careful choice of your object. Otherwise, the selection of an object might provide the spark for new ideas. |
Media & Format:
You MUST work with media from at least two (2) of the following three (3) categories (taken from the Subject Guide). You are allowed to create up to 20 of your artworks with one medium. Therefore, at least 5 artworks must come from a different category of media.
It makes sense to focus on lens-based media (ie. digital photography) since it is relatively quick/ rapid and will allow for the practice of "purposeful play".

Visual Arts Journal:
Be sure to track your thinking and development of ideas through both image (ie. sketches) and written notes. Included in your supporting studies/ journal should be descriptive and explorative comments tracking your project, i.e. if you rotated your object, Why? If you set it in a specific environment, Why? What were the expected results, etc. You should also print ALL contact sheets. This is to be done for each of the twenty-five works.

Filters
You may select from the list below to help aid you in getting your projects completed:
Self (you, your identity, self image, self-esteem)
Public vs. Private Conflict/ resolution (war and peace) Location/ dislocation Heroes/ celebrity Politics Transformation Text and image Humour/ dark humour The Landscape Surveillance |
Family or ethnic group (not necessarily yours)
Hybridity Historical perspectives Shock/ Horror/ Ugliness The 5 senses Archetypes Disruption Appropriation Juxtaposition Everyday life |
Gender issues/ Sexual politics
Capitalism/ (Free)Trade/ Economic equality/ Globalism Science & Technology Symbols/ Systems of Meaning/ Codes Perception Kitsch/ Taste Illogical combination Concealment Layering Youth culture (issues/ concerns) |
Fantasy/ Reality
Psychology Evolution Uncertainty Origins/ Beginnings/ Endings/ divisions in time Values-social, religious… The elements (earth, wind, air, fire, water) Story/ narrative Science or Technology Dhaka/ Bangladesh/ South Asia/ Asia Any other suitable filter you might want to consider |
Take your concentration (for instance, feminism) and look at it through the filter of one of these topics (say, Kitsch/Taste). Your project will involve developing an approach, an idea, experimenting with media and techniques that compliment that idea, researching the idea and eventually creating an artwork that embodies your idea. So you might end up creating a Jeff Koons-like piece with a feminist message. -Adapted from Frankfurt International School
